Dow Powerplay Revitalizing the Ice at a Classic Arena
Designing a foundation that would support their ice rink for generations to come, the team behind the renovations of the iconic Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor reached out to Dow for the right technology. Having enabled the construction of best-in-class ice rinks and sports stadiums around the world, Dow was ready to meet the need, especially for the University of Michigan, a sustainability innovation partner of Dow and educator of future leaders in science. Dow donated more than 35,000 square feet of STYROFOAM™ Brand XPS Insulation and over 750 gallons of DOWFROST HD™ Heat Transfer Fluid to provide:
- Protection against subsoil freezing and heaving of the slab beneath the ice sheet.
- Efficient transfer of heat to where it needs to be and reduced loss of heat to other layers.
- Prevention of crumbling and waterlogging of the insulation, mold and decay beneath the slab, or corrosion and bursting of the pipes.
- Consistent temperature control that enables the creation of good ice in less time.
