Dow people in our Manufacturing & Engineering (M&E) organization ensure that products are made in a safe, environmentally responsible, efficient, and cost effective manner in production plants around the world. They also ensure that these plants are built, operated and well maintained.

Engineering and Construction

Employees in Engineering and Construction are focused on designing and implementing projects of varying sizes, including construction of new chemical manufacturing plants and support facilities as well as projects to improve the effectiveness of existing assets.

Production

Employees in Production provide daily technical support to plant operating personnel in order to maintain the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a manufacturing facility. Key areas of emphasis are environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) performance, product quality, maintaining & optimizing operating costs, and all aspects of plant technical performance such as yield, energy efficiency, production rates and asset utilization.

Maintenance

Employees in Maintenance provide engineering support to solve equipment related issues that reduce overall production rates in manufacturing facilities.

Maintenance/Reliability engineers provide technical expertise that result in the increase of mechanical reliability of equipment in the production unit.

Maintenance engineers support maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. They work closely with the plant maintenance group to develop the best immediate repair methods for equipment.

Reliability Engineers utilize reliability and predictive tools & technology to help prevent unexpected equipment outages that minimize the long-term cost of ownership of a manufacturing facility. Reliability Engineers lead and/or participate in root cause failure investigations of broken down mechanical equipment and work on improving operating discipline to maintain long-term equipment reliability of Dow assets.

Dow’s chemical process technologies are managed by employees in our global Technology Centers, which provide the technical expertise to support, develop and advance the company’s technologies globally.


CO-OPS & INTERNSHIPS

U.S. MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING NATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM

The Dow Chemical U.S. M&E National Student Program provides university and college students firsthand experience of working for a global company in the industrial sector and the opportunity to evaluate Dow as a potential full time employer.

For Dow, the program provides access to a pool of diverse, highly motivated candidates, qualified for entry-level professional career opportunities.

How the Program Works

Students are recruited to participate in the program as an alternating term co-op or intern working on a variety of U.S. based work assignments lasting a minimum of twelve (12) weeks. The assignments give students realistic, hands-on experience similar to what they might expect to encounter as a full-time Dow employee in a similar entry level role.

ALTERNATING TERM CO-OP PROGRAM

The Alternating Term Co-Op (ATC) program is a collaboration between Dow and universities or colleges with programs that allow students to alternate between periods of study and paid work assignments while working toward a bachelors degree in an engineering discipline the Dow seeks. The ATC program is aimed at students who are in their freshman or sophomore year of college.

Students in the ATC program are encouraged to work at different Dow locations across the United States and try different roles as they progress from one assignment to the next.

Requirements to participate in the Program:

  • Register with the co-op office at your respective university or college
  • Major in one of the disciplines from which Dow M&E hires, primarily Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering
  • Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.700 or better at your current university or college
  • Agree to work a minimum of three (3) terms with no more than 50 percent of work terms in the summer
  • Provide your own transportation to and from work location
  • M&E employs only U.S. citizens and foreign nationals authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis when filling U.S. based positions

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Our internship program is aimed at students who are in their junior or senior year of college and working toward a bachelors degree in an engineering discipline that Dow seeks. The internship opportunities are paid work assignments that typically occur during the summer but can also take place at other times of the year.

Requirements to participate in the Program:

  • Major in one of the disciplines from which Dow M&E hires, primarily Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering
  • Maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.700 or better at your current university or college
  • Provide your own transportation to and from work location
  • M&E employs only U.S. citizens and foreign nationals authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis when filling U.S. based positions

U.S. NATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Salary: You will be paid a competitive salary during your work periods with Dow. Your salary is based on the number of credit hours completed toward your degree.
  • Travel Reimbursement: Dow will pay you a pre-determined lump sum to cover your round trip travel between your school and the Dow location to which you have been assigned. Depending on the length of travel, Dow may cover all mileage, hotel, and meal reimbursement that will be paid within a few weeks of the date you begin work.
  • Housing: Dow offers students fully furnished housing at a subsidized rate. Dow will also pay all utilities associated with the housing. The rent for Dow subsidized housing is paid via a payroll deduction.
  • Personal Time: You will have sixteen (16) hours of paid personal time (vacation) for each term you work.
  • Holiday Pay: You are eligible for holiday pay if you are in paid status (work or vacation) the work day before and after a holiday.
  • Flexibility: Dow offers flexible and creative programs and policies to support employee’s effort to balance work and personal commitments. These include compressed work schedules, flexible work arrangements, and a broad range of employee discounts. Flexible work arrangements vary depending upon agreement between the student and their supervisor.

ECLIPSE

Engineering Challenge to Lead in People & Skill Enhancement

The ECLIPSE program is an overhaul of Dow’s traditional training and development process. It is a five to six year development program for new engineers at Dow. The purpose of the program is to accelerate job skill development and experience acquisition and to help new engineers to explore their career opportunities within the company. Employees participating in ECLIPSE will be assigned to Engineering Solutions and Manufacturing roles. Rotational assignments will allow employees to gain experience in both departments while receiving consistent and relevant development, mentorship and career coaching as they progress.

ECLIPSE will allow you to:

U.S. FAST START TRAINING

Dow believes that advanced manufacturing is critical to the nation’s long-term competitiveness. Dow, like other companies dependent on a talented and innovative workforce, has a responsibility to use its expertise and resources to make the workforce stronger.

We believe that public-private partnerships are critical to the developing and sustaining the workforce of the 21st Century. Dow’s contributions to the Fast Start training program are helping ensure that community colleges can act quickly to train employees in the skills they need to meet the needs of local manufacturers.

The Fast Start program supports manufacturers in the Great Lakes Bay Region by training workers for the jobs available now, while building a local talent pipeline to meet future needs. It’s a win-win.

The types of Fast Start programs include:

  • Business Process Services Center: A five-week training program for careers in supply chain, finance, customer service, purchasing and administrative support.
  • Chemical Processing: The 12-week Chemical Process Operator program teaches basic chemical processing and manufacturing operations.  It also  includes vital processing skills.
  • Advanced Lithium Battery Manufacturing: The 10-week Advanced Battery Manufacturing program trains potential future employees for advanced battery manufacturers, preparing students in the roles of process operators, technicians and skilled trades.
  • Solar Manufacturing: The six-week Solar Manufacturing program is designed to train new employees in the roles of project managers, installers, technicians and designers for contractors or product/service providers who want to bring efficient solar energy usage to Michigan communities.

APPRENTICESHIPS

U.S. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

Dow and other U.S.-based manufacturers have in recent years announced plans to expand their U.S. operations and create new apprenticeships in Manufacturing & Engineering. One of the greatest challenges facing industry today is a shortage of candidates with the technical skills necessary to qualify for key roles now available in the manufacturing sector. The Dow U.S. Apprenticeship Program will provide a pipeline of talent which will ensure that we maintain our highly skilled technical workforce to support business growth and advance skill development in Manufacturing and Engineering.

The fully paid Dow U.S. Apprenticeship Program offers three years of world-class training and on-the-job experience in some of the most sought after and highest earning technical specialties in the industry. You work for Dow, and Dow pays you to earn a two year college degree and gain in-depth, specialized training in one of America's most in-demand manufacturing specialties.

Dow seeks apprentices with a passion for complex, high-tech work in a modern manufacturing setting. Successful candidates will possess mechanical aptitude, critical thinking capabilities, strong interpersonal skills, personal responsibility, a proven ability to work well within a team, and the willingness and ability to learn.

Through partnerships between Dow and local community colleges, this structured three year apprenticeship program combines classroom training and hands-on learning to build in-depth skills and experience. Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices will be evaluated for full-time employment opportunities at Dow.

Participants in the Dow U.S. Apprenticeship Program must have a high school degree or GED with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and completed coursework in high school Algebra. Candidates who have completed natural or physical science coursework are preferred.
